The background#StandWithHer is inspired by the 2024 Oscar® nominated documentary, To Kill a Tiger. The film charts the extraordinary journey of Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, India, and his wife, Jaganti, who seek justice for their 13-year-old daughter, Kiran (pseudonym), after three men sexually assault her.
Despite social ostracization, death threats, financial hardship, and caste prejudice, Ranjit, Jaganti, and their brave daughter refuse to capitulate. Instead, they quietly and steadfastly demand their legal and human rights, and by defying the odds, they win a landmark ruling.
Their story of courage and resilience has the power to galvanize people around the world to build a future free of gender-based violence.why it matters– 736 million women have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime [2018, UN Women].

– Over 48% of South Asians in the U.S. have experienced some form of gender-based violence (GBV) [South Asian SOAR].
– Among undergraduate students, 26.4% of females and 6.8% of males experience rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation [RAINN].

#STANDWITHHER IMPACT CAMPAIGN
The ripple effects of this violence on families, communities, and society at large are both vast and immeasurable. To truly create a safer, more equitable world, we must adopt inclusive and holistic strategies that work at both the micro and macro levels.
